Real-time integration between an Electronic Laboratory Notebook and all of the other informatics systems in the lab (LIMS, CDS, SDMS, ERP, etc) is a key requirement for a laboratory that wants to go paperless.

In a truly integrated lab or “iLAB”, information from any laboratory application is available electronically to the Electronic Lab Notebook for real-time sharing and updating. The ELN can use information from other applications to eliminate the need to manually look up or record information. It can also apply that information to perform automated checks and ensure that correct workflows are always followed.

• Sample information in LIMS can be used to automatically populate fields in an ELN worksheet.
• Completed ELN worksheets can be automatically stored in a Document Management System for easy access and retrieval.
• Sample preparation information from ELN worksheets can be transferred directly to a CDS (Chromatography Data System).
• The ELN can connect with a Calibration Management application to make sure that instrument calibration requirements are complete and up to date before an instrument is used.
• The ELN can connect with a Chemical Inventory Manager to confirm that the right materials are always being used and that they have not passed their expiry date.
• The ELN can automatically upgrade the inventory level of materials as they are being prepared or after they are used, ensuring that inventory levels are always accurate and up-to-date.

This principle of real time integration can be applied to the automated transfer of information back and forth between an Electronic Lab Notebook and virtually any informatics application.
